PIECE OF LATE QUEEN ELIZABETH II'S WEDDING CAKE SET TO WHET APPETITES

A SLICE OF HISTORY

S there anything that brings not just our country but the whole world together like a royal wedding?

Some 1.9 billion people were said to watch Prince Harry marry Meghan Markle in 2018 - beating the estimated 750 million who watched Prince Charles wed Diana in 1981.

But it was the wedding of 21-year-old Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) to her 26-year-old beau, Philip Mountbatten, that was one of the most significant and symbolic royal events of the 20th century.

Taking place at Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947, the ceremony was broadcast live (on BBC radio of course) to 200 million people worldwide.

But for the war-weary average Joe, the significance went far beyond a romantic union - it represented optimism after the hardships of WWII.

Winston Churchill called the wedding "a flash of colour on the hard road we have to travel."

The wedding breakfast, held at Buckingham Palace, was attended by 150 guests - a glittering assembly of world royalty.

The menu included filet de sole Mountbatten, partridge, and as a dessert, bombe glacée Princess Elizabeth.

Then came the cake.
