IF JOHN RYDER is looking for inspiration to pull off one of the biggest shocks in the sport, then it may have come in a pie and mash shop a few weeks ago.
The Londoner sat down with John H Stracey in Castle’s famous eatery to discuss their common ground.
Cockney Stracey remains the only British fighter to win a world title in Mexico.
He travelled in 1975 and pulled off one of the biggest upsets by dethroning Cuban-Mexican great Jose Napoles of the WBC welterweight title.
It’s a victory that remains iconic in British boxing history as Stracey picked himself up off the canvas to stop Napoles in the sixth after slicing his face up with punches in front of around 40,000 fans at a bullring in Mexico City.
It is also one of the few fights always listed, when a British fighter is going up against the odds, as one of the great away wins by a boxer from these shores.
