CRIMINALS as young as 11 are pictured in a haunting collection of mug shots of women and girls in a Victorian prison. Offences ranging from stealing boots, pick-pocketing and drunken behaviour saw them locked up in Newcastle City Gaol. The images date back to the 1870s, when photography was in its infancy. Author Dr Clare Sandford-Couch is researching the prison and said: "Some of the women come across as incredible characters.
