ARSENAL thought they might have been on to a big win in the Carabao Cup - but they could only scrape through to the fourth round.

- BY TOM CANTON

Their opponents, Port Vale, rallied after an early Eberechi Eze goal to frustrate the Premier League side until Leandro Trossard clinched the win.

After the elimination of Manchester United by Grimsby in the second round, the Gunners were very aware of the cup embarrassment of being beaten away to a lower league side.

However, the summer investment has given Mikel Arteta’s side plenty of depth, so much so that there was no space for any of the youth team regulars among the substitutes besides 15-year-old Max Dowman.

Over 16,000 supporters were inside Vale Park, the most for more than two decades, to witness Arsenal's battle with the League One outfit.
