Doc Who is bigger than just lead actor

As an avid fan of Doctor Who from somewhere in the 1960s, I have seen so many faces of the Doctor and occasionally several faces at once in a series.

Some of the faces have worked better than others but who cares? It is the story and the mythology we watch not the faces. Given the apparent lack of actors in Britain several people have had other minor roles before coming back as the Doctor so the return of Billie Piper could mean nothing or everything after 60 years of plot twists.
