SCIENTISTS have uncovered why Earth was plunged into an Ice Age - and warn we could be hurtling towards another one.
Australian researchers believe the planet's lowestever volcanic carbon emissions triggered its longest global freeze - which lasted 57million years.
It transformed the Earth into a snowball "from poles to equator" in a period before dinosaurs or even complex plant life existed.
