It’s a chance for shed lovers to show off their garden hidey-holes and compete for a £1,000 prize. But how much do you really know about these palaces of peace and quiet? Here MEG JORSH sheds some light on the issue.

The word shed is thought to come from the Anglo-Saxon “shud” meaning “shade” or “cover”. It has been around since the 1400s.

Britain is often quoted as having more sheds per capita than any other country. According to a study, two thirds of us own one and of those who don't, 44% would like to.

One in five Brits admit to hiding from their partner and kids in their sheds. We also use the outbuildings to hoard more than £10billion worth of possessions.
