Tie something new

THERE is a bit of an end-of-year feeling when the wild brown trout season closes.

I think my wife might wonder if the rods will be put away for the winter, but there are still bass to be caught, stillwater trout are there all year, maybe a back-end salmon or two, while pike and cod will come into their own soon.

And I feel like my grayling fishing is now a staple part of the calendar.

Saying that it's felt a lot like fly-tying time with the shorter days and squally showers.

When the wind’s cutting across the hills and the rain is sideways again, the notion of a few hours at the bench feels like the only sensible way to keep a hand in.
