MSPs vote to free cons as jail numbers hit new high

SCOTLAND'S prison population reached a new high yesterday as MSPs passed new rules to free hundreds of offenders early.

Inmates will be freed in phases from next week to ease pressure on jails which now house 8431 people.

Justice Secretary Angela Constance said the new regulations would provide “critical relief” from the problem of overcrowding.
