'Woman told McCanns she was daughter Madeleine

MADELEINE McCann's parents were stalked for years by a woman claiming to be their missing daughter, a court heard.

Julia Wandelt, 24, is alleged to have bombarded Kate McCann with up to 60 phone calls and messages a day, and called her “mommy”.

She is also accused of contacting Madeleine's sister Amelie, begging her to take a DNA test to prove she was her sibling.

Prosecutors told Leicester crown court that Wandelt had “pursued” the McCanns for almost three years and eventually turned up at their home in Rothley, Leicestershire.

Wandelt, from Poland, and her co-accused Karen Spragg, 61, of Cardiff, deny stalking the McCanns from June 2022 to February this year.

Michael Duck KC, prosecuting, said Wandelt first claimed she was Madeleine in 2022, 15 years after she vanished from a holiday flat in Praia da Luz, Portugal, aged three, in 2007.
