Cancer patient George brands decision to end policy 'disgrace'

- PAUL HUTCHEON

A DYING grandad has hit out at an insurance giant after it “callously" scrapped his funeral expenses policy.

Cancer patient George Davies, 81, said he is “incensed” after paying into a “dud” scheme that will not help his family after he passes away.

He said of the decision by underwriter Maiden Life Forsakrings: “For these people to hide behind the jargonese in the small print that no one reads is a disgrace.”

A rally will take place outside Holyrood today protesting about the end of the insurance scheme, while Labour MSP Paul Sweeney warned that “paupers’ funerals” are back.

Hundreds of Scots pensioners are believed to have paid for the Family Protection Plan (FPP) that started in 1999.

They were sold the scheme via broker CMutual and credit unions, but were shocked when Maiden Life Forsakrings said the policy would end on November 30.

George, a retired vehicle repairs manager from Bellshill, started paying into the scheme nearly 20 years ago.

He is receiving palliative care for inoperable cancer and fears he will be left without a penny when he dies.

George said: “I don't fear dying. But I do fear what happens after I go. It's now a constant source of worry.

"My wife and I have paid money in every month. When I first got the letter, it came as a total shock. I was incensed.
