'It is morally wrong': YFCs vote against inheritance tax plans

YOUNG Farmers' Clubs have voted by an overwhelming 98.9% majority to pass a motion denouncing the UK Government's proposed changes to inheritance tax.

'It is morally wrong': YFCs vote against inheritance tax plans

The motion was debated at the National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs' (NFYFC) Annual Meeting of Clubs (AMC), which was held in Leamington Spa.

It was proposed by Luke Cox from Wiltshire, who asked members to agree that the proposed tax reforms would have a detrimental impact on the next generation of farmers and threaten the security of family farms.

Speaking at the meeting, the 28-year-old shared how the tax would result in a lack of investment in his family's Gloucestershire farm, due to their need to save for a potential inheritance tax bill.

"It's the restraint on investment that I think is particularly cruel to us as the next generation," he said. "The family farm tax is mathematically and morally wrong. I call on you to stand up for the future of UK agriculture."

YFC AGRI group chair, Cumbria-based Robbie Tuer, seconded the motion, highlighting how "the next generation is having to navigate more hurdles than ever before", and called for more representation in policy decisions.
