‘Mitigating against deterioration’ In 2024 alone, Flintshire Council fixed 3,208 potholes - but the cash-strapped council is struggling to stay on stop of the issue.

‘According to its own figures, Flint-shire’s road network requires £48m of funding just to meet the backlog of repairs and resurfacing work that has built up.

‘An internal report noted that county roads are only resurfaced once every 89 years.

With unclassified residential streets a lower priority, it's estimated these can only expect to be resurfaced once every 247 years.

Currently, the council has an allocation of £1.5m capital funding, plus £225,000 of revenue funding for highway maintenance.

Yet the estimated annual sum needed to maintain the current status quo - to stop further deterioration - is estimated at £5m.
