NO SPADE, NO PROBLEM ... JUST BORROW ONE FROM CAROLE'S TINY HUT

- By ANDREW FORGRAVE

Buckets of kindness at beach toy library

FOR nine years, Carole Beavis has visited her local beach almost daily, often collecting litter casually discarded by holidaymakers.

Now a grandmum of six, she’s amassed quite the collection of plastic buckets, spades and sand moulds.

Some have been handed to her grandchildren, fished out from a large storage box before they head down to Traeth Llandanwg, Gwynedd.

But for a while she’s been wanting to put them to wider use - to make her collection available to visiting families who might have arrived without sandcastle essentials.

Carole has now unveiled a cute little ‘Beach Toy Library’ she built herself, mostly from driftwood found on the beach. Inside are curated some of her finds, neatly hanging from hooks and ready for deployment.

Eternally optimistic, she expects people will be respectful and return the borrowed buckets and spades after use. “But if they get pinched, that’s OK, I've got a large stock and the library can be easily replenished,” she said.

Some items, she imagine might disappear forever. Others might be abandoned and re-collected during litter picks, thus adding to an eternal cycle of re-use that Carole is keen to foster.
