Mistreatment of pensioners is a national disgrace

WHEN the elderly of our country take to the streets, something is deeply broken. Earlier this week, more than 150 pensioners marched to Parliament demanding what should never be demanded - dignity in their prime age.

That these men and women, some in their 70s, should be forced to carry placards against electricity hikes and unpaid grants, is a national disgrace. Our pensioners are not asking for charity, they are asking for what they have earned, but instead they are met with endless queues outside Sassa offices and a grant so meagre it cannot cover food, electricity and in some instances transport.
