Balancing budget and symbolism in dome debate

THE temporary dome in the parliamentary precinct was built as an emergency measure after the 2022 fire destroyed the National Assembly chamber. It cost R2.7 million to transport and erect. Since May, it has stood empty. Now, there is a proposal to spend R39 million furnishing it so it can host sittings.

Supporters of the plan say the cost is not about appearances. They argue that a functioning Parliament requires proper seating, committee rooms, sound systems and broadcasting facilities. Without these, the dome cannot serve its purpose. They also note that much of the furniture and equipment could be reused once the restored parliamentary buildings are ready, making the investment less wasteful in the long term.
