Back issues hitting England's Euros hopes

GARETH SOUTHGATE has been left surveying the wreckage of another season before a major tournament.

This will be his fourth in charge as England manager - but never before has he faced such a selection nightmare with huge problems in defence.

In fact, Southgate has been left struggling to find a fit left-back for the Euros amid major fitness and availability issues - some of them have not kicked a ball in months.

Southgate will pick an expanded squad of 30-plus names for his training squad with Manchester United, Manchester City and also Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham due to report up later because of involvement in the FA Cup and Champions League.

Rather than a squad announcement, even the FA are billing it as a "training squad" because they want at least 22 players to be available for the first meet-up next week.
