King urges world to be vigilant
THE King says the world cannot allow the horrors of the Holocaust to be forgotten or repeated.
On an emotional first visit to Auschwitz, Charles joined dozens of other heads of state to hear harrowing stories from survivors returning to mourn those who perished here in southern Poland.
At the entrance to the site, Charles paused under the gates - bearing the motto Arbeit Macht Frei, or "work sets you free" - that have come to symbolise the terror of the Nazi regime.
He appeared to hold back tears as he laid a wreath at the Death Wall where thousands of prisoners were shot dead, biting his lip after placing a handwritten note containing the words "in special remembrance".
Earlier in the day, the King met survivors at the Jewish Community Centre in Krakow, where he implored nations to "challenge prejudice and never to be a bystander in the face of violence and hate".
Charles added: "As the number of Holocaust survivors regrettably diminishes with the passage of time, the responsibility of remembrance rests far heavier on our shoulders and on those of generations yet unborn.
