Nottingham inquiry told Calocane not sectioned initially, due to his race

A TRIPLE killer went on a knife rampage around Nottingham three years after terrorising a woman and forcing her to jump from a window, a public inquiry has heard.

Paranoid schizophrenic Valdo Calocane stabbed Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both 19, and Ian Coates, 65, to death in June 2023.

But an inquiry into the attacks was yesterday told mental health professionals chose not to detain him in 2020 after considering the "over-representation" of young black men in detention.

They were said to be "leaning towards" detaining Calocane after he tried to force his way into a woman's home but ultimately decided to release him into the community. But an "even more serious incident occurred" when he then went to a woman's home and tried to force his way in.

Counsel to the inquiry, Rachel Langdale KC, said: "She was so frightened she jumped out of a first-floor window, causing serious damage to her spine."
