Sister of victim hits out at killer for sick attempt to cover tracks

- BY DAN WARBURTON

A WIFE killer tried to get his son to dig up her corpse in a twisted plot to clear his name.

Andrew Griggs was branded a “coward” by his victim's sister after he was given extra time in jail for his sick effort to cover up his crime.

Cheating Griggs killed his pregnant wife Debbie in 1999 but always maintained that she had walked out on him.

He was finally convicted of the mother-of-three’s murder in 2019 and jailed for life with a minimum term of 20 years, despite the body having not been found.

Griggs later tried to get son Jake, 25, to unearth her remains in an attempt to trick the authorities into believing Debbie was still alive.

Yesterday, the 62-year-old was handed an extra three years in jail after he admitted perverting the course of justice.

Debbie’ sister, Wendie Rowlinson, told the Mirror: “Griggs’ extra sentence is deplorable. In the judge's words, ‘regarding the nature of the offence’ being ‘the most desperate and serious of its type as is possible to imagine.
