I know what it means to Scots as I covered the last World Cup they played in, France 1998, and partied with the Tartan Army in Juan-les-Pins. Which certainly beat getting teargassed and dodging concrete slabs with rioting England fans in Marseille a few days later.

The kilted hordes will invade North America next year along with the English and possibly the Welsh and the Irish. Meaning the tournament, spread across USA, Canada and Mexico, could be the biggest-ever celebration of the world's greatest game for the people of these football-mad islands.

Well in Canada and Mexico, at least. In America, it could be a disaster. Due to its megalomaniacal president demanding that he controls the whole tournament and the bootlicking president of Fifa pandering to his master's every demand.
