Latest version of Frankenstein is a dark marvel that's well worth watching

Movie lovers may think Frankenstein cannot be reimagined yet again, but director Guillermo del Toro makes it work beautifully.

The prospect of yet another movie adaptation of Mary Shelley's hugely influential novel Frankenstein might not have filled many film buffs with joy. But when that adaptation is helmed by Oscar-winning Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, it's another story.

Known throughout his career for his affinity with dark fairy tales, Gothic stories and horror, the pairing of the man behind Pan's Labyrinth (2006) and The Shape of Water (2017) with the original monster story is a match made in heaven.

It's a pity Frankenstein was not released in South African cinemas, as the sumptuous visuals would truly have been something to behold on the big screen. With lush costumes and elaborate sets, the film is a feast for the eyes a heightened, mythical version of reality and the perfect backdrop for such an operatic tale, which also includes practical, often gory visual effects.
