IN a historic moment for the Maldives, the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) was officially opened on 26 July.

This event coincided with the country’s 60th anniversary of independence, marking both a cultural milestone and a transformative leap forward in the nation’s tourism and aviation infrastructure. The inauguration ceremony, graced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, was attended by over 6,000 invitees and was complemented by spectacular celebrations, including a drone and light show, as well as a grand fireworks display.
