JOS BUTTLER was left filled with "sadness" when he announced he would resign as England's white-ball captain after today's Champions Trophy dead-rubber against South Africa.

Buttler inherited a side that were ODI world champions when he succeeded Eoin Morgan in June 2022.

England also won the T20 equivalent a few months into his reign but their fortunes have nosedived since.

They relinquished both crowns in abject style before a group-stage Champions Trophy exit, after back-to- back defeats by Australia and Afghanistan left Buttler weighing up his future.

The 34-year-old wondered whether he was part of the problem after the Afghanistan defeat on Wednesday, and he confirmed his conclusion 48 hours later following a prolonged run of poor form from his side.
