UNEMPLOYED UK doctors want British prioritisation and more roles as they compete against increasing international applications.

- BY SARAH BALTROP

Some resident doctors said they are so "desperate" for work they would accept current salaries if it meant more jobs amid ongoing strikes.

This year, 12,305 British resident doctors applied for around 10,000 training roles, alongside 20,803 international medical graduates. The trend is skyrocketing, with IMG applications doubling from 10,402 to 20,803 in the last two years.

A Lancaster-based doctor, who chose to remain anonymous, told the Express: "Someone from overseas could apply for a UK job, not have any training in the NHS whatsoever, but they would still be on the exact same footing as a UK doctor who's worked in the NHS for, let's say, three years."
