Teacher is first to get MS 'game-changer' therapy

A BIOLOGY teacher has become the first patient in the UK to receive a “game-changer” therapy to treat multiple sclerosis.

The CAR T-cell treatment is custom-built for each person in a laboratory and involves removing some of their immune cells.

These T-cells are then genetically modified to recognise and kill B cells, which are known to cause damage and allow the condition to progress. The therapy is also used to treat certain blood cancers.

Emily Henders, 37, from Bushey, Herts, received the treatment at University College London Hospital as part of a global clinical trial into whether it can treat MS.
