Mullins junior liked the look of Apolon De Charnie, purchased by owner Edward Ware after getting to within six lengths of the well-fancied Proactif on his Auteuil debut, on the Closutton gallops.
PATRICK MULLINS was compensated for missing the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup by booting home 50-1 outsider Apolon De Charnie in the JCB Triumph Hurdle.
The leading amateur rider had pinned his hopes on partnering Gaelic Warrior, but a fate setback for two-time champion Galopin Des Champs meant he stepped aside for Paul Townend.
