'Our clubs are secret weapon in fight against food insecurity'

A FOOD club founder has called on ministers to end food poverty as his helpers treat 4,500 more families to hot meals over the holidays.

Mark Game set up The Bread and Butter Thing in Manchester with partner Jane in a van in 2016, to help those in need.

Now the charity — which supplies three big bags of fruit, veg, cupboard staples and chilled goods for £8.50 — runs some 145 hubs from Northumberland to Maidstone, helping 100,000 people.

Their study found that after rent and energy bills, almost 70% of homes have less than £50 per head a month for food, clothes, toiletries, transport and other essentials.
