BOSSES are cutting back on the number of permanent staff and hiring temps instead in a bid to protect themselves from savage economic headwinds.

A survey of 400 recruitment and employment consultancies also found that despite the shortage of workers, starting pay for permanent staff increased at the slowest rate since April last year.

And there are warnings wage growth could drop off into next year.

S&P Global conducted the research for KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC). It came as the economy is set to plunge into recession, with firms’ costs soaring and households reeling from runaway bills.
