Medics get sepsis training after rugby playing student died from missed infection

HOSPITAL staff are to undergo mandatory training on a scoring system that indicates signs of sepsis and other serious infections, after a student died

The move was announced at the inquest into the death of Maddy Lawrence.

The 20-year-old died from an infection at Southmead Hospital run by North Bristol NHS Trust - two weeks after she dislocated her hip while playing in a rugby match.

Her family called on coroner Dr Peter Harrowing to ensure lessons are learned.

Maddy was studying at Bristol's University of the West of England when she was hurt, in March 2022.
