Man who turned beauty spot into a £1m rubbish tip is fined just £100,000

A LANDOWNER who made more than £1million by illegally turning a wildlife haven into a caravan park and rubbish tip was fined just £100,000.

John Holland, 59, crammed waste and over 90 caravans and 40 vehicles into two fields which are part of a breeding ground for wading birds.

He also laid down 300 metres of roadway at Long Load, within the Wet Moor site of special scientific interest in Somerset.

Holland admitted two offences under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 after a four-year probe into his activities by Natural England, but claimed to be bankrupt.
