Mahmood vows to 'ramp up' deportations as first '1 in, 1 out' deal migrants reach UK

THE first legal migrants from France under the Government's "one in, one out" deal have arrived in the UK.

A family of three, including a small child, came on a commercial plane following security vetting.

The Home Office has deported four people - an Indian, an Iranian, an Afghan and an Eritrean - to France.

But Britain must accept an equal number of legal arrivals.

A Government spokesman said: "These are critical first steps.

This is a clear message to people-smuggling gangs that illegal entry into the UK will not be tolerated."

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood vowed to step up deportations to France, but appeared to admit the policy was not yet deterring Channel crossings.
