I lied...I did have an affair with a young colleague. It was unwise but not illegal'

PHILLIP Schofield's TV career was in tatters last night after he was sacked by his management firm for lying to it and ITV bosses about an "unwise" affair with a young male runner from This Morning.

The 61-year-old, who left This Morning last weekend amid reports of a rift with co-star Holly Willoughby, put out an extraordinary statement in which he also quit hosting the British Soap Awards - meaning he has no TV work lined up.

Schofield admitted that he and the unnamed man had a relationship which was more than a friendship, something he called "unwise but not illegal". It took place while he was still married to his wife of 30 years, Stephanie Lowe, the mother of his two daughters.

He insisted to colleagues and bosses at This Morning at the time that it was only a friendship -something he now admits was untrue.

His statement was first handed to a national newspaper as he lied to it and his own lawyer to prevent journalists writing a story.

Unwise

Schofield said he had apologised to the paper about misleading statements he made concerning a "story which they wanted to write about me a few days ago.

"The first thing I want to say is: I am deeply sorry for having lied to them and to many others about a relationship that I had with someone working on This Morning.

"I did have a consensual on-off relationship with a younger male colleague at This Morning.
