'I can't sing to drums going boom, boom...
Daily Express
|April 17, 2025
THE Who star Roger Daltrey blasted Zak Starkey’s drumming repeatedly in a show that was the “final straw” for the band's latest line-up.
The group fired the drummer — who is the son of Beatles drummer Sir Ringo Starr - after concerns over the standard of his performance at a Royal Albert Hall show on March 30.
Now details have emerged, including how frontman Roger, 81, threw his hands up to complain and stopped the gig numerous times.
At one point he complained: “All I've got is drums going ‘boom, boom, boom’. I can’t sing to that.”
He added: “To sing that song, I do need to hear the key, and I can’t.”
At another point, he complained: ‘It was going so well... I can sing in any f***ing key you want, but I need to hear which one.”
An insider said: “It was the final straw for the band and they knew they had to pull the plug. It’s a shame — but it is what it is.”
