The sister of Sasha Marsden, 16, stabbed 100 times by her murderer, urges MPs to scrap a 28-day deadline for appeals against lenient sentences

- Steph Spyro Deputy Political Editor

THE sister of a murdered girl who was stabbed 100 times wants MPs to scrap a 28-day limit on appeals against “lenient” sentences.

Katie Brett said the murderer of Sasha Marsden, 16, may go free in 2048, but stressed: “Justice shouldn’t have an expiry date." Sasha, of Blackpool, was stabbed in the head and neck and set on fire after being lured to her death with the promise of a job.

David Minto, right, is serving 35 years in jail for her 2013 murder. He also raped Sasha but was not given a whole-life sentence for his crimes, meaning he is set to be freed in 2048 when he will be 57.

Katie has taken aim at the 28-day deadline that her family had after the trial to decide whether to appeal against the sentence of the man who "destroyed our lives". Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick echoed her calls for reform, saying "evil" criminals should never be let off the hook with lenient sentences.

Writing in the Express, Katie, 34, said: "Twentyeight days the same amount of time you have to return something to a shop." She insisted: "Justice shouldn't have an expiry date." The Sentencing Bill is being debated in Parliament over the course of this week and MPs will have only a brief window to act on it.
