It was released yesterday as William and Kate's visit to the US was barely underway. The high profile trip, already overshadowed by a Palace racism row, has now been derailed by the one-minute teaser. It shows Meghan apparently in tears – and in another clip a stern-looking Kate.
The timing of its release was calculated to coincide with the biggest royal overseas visit since the death of the Queen, commentators believe.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said it was “obviously timed to take away from the Wales’ trip to Boston”, adding that Meghan and Harry “like to control their narrative”.
He said courtiers were helpless to stop it and added: “It obviously looks deplorable but there is nothing they can do about it.”
Royal author Phil Dampier said: “It’s obvious Harry and Meghan released the trailer for their Netflix show in a deliberate attempt to overshadow William and Kate’s visit to Boston.” Meanwhile, the Sussexes’ friend British journalist Omid Scobie gleefully tweeted: “If tomorrow is Prince William’s Super Bowl, then here’s your halftime show...”
The visit to Boston has been widely seen as an attempt by William and Kate to reset the Royal Family’s reputation across the pond.
The six-part documentary series, which is set to air from December 8 – exactly three months after Queen Elizabeth’s death – promises to tell Harry and Meghan’s love story and battles with their family and the institution of monarchy from their point of view.
