'Government's bioethanol policy will close UK farms'

FARMERS have warned agriculture will be destroyed unless the country’s biggest bioethanol plant is saved from closure.

It comes after the US-UK trade deal opened the domestic bioethanol market to cheaper US imports that undercut British producers.

Bioethanol is a renewable fuel made by fermenting sugars and starches found in plant matter.

The Vivergo Fuels plant in Hull, understood to be losing £3million a month, accepted its final lorry load of wheat this month.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds must decide this week whether to bail out the firm.
