Frontrunner sealed race to be leader

WALTER Menzies Campbell, better known as “Ming” was a former leader of the Liberal Democrat Party and was the MP for North East Fife at Westminster for 28 years.

The veteran politician briefly led his party for 19 months, from March 2006, before falling victim to a whispering campaign claiming he was too old at 66. He went on to serve another eight years as an MP.

But long before he entered the highly competitive political arena, he was a giant of the sporting one.

He held the British 100m record from 1967 to 1974 and ran in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics — being dubbed The Flying Scotsman.

During his athletics career, Campbell captained the British men’s team at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Jamaica.
