TRANSPORT Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan has urged unions to end the rail strike misery that "will achieve nothing" as they begin the biggest walkout of the year today.

End rail misery and strike a deal, urges minister

Only 11 per cent of normal services will run and there will be no trains in many areas, according to Network Rail.

Ms Trevelyan said: "The very last thing our country needs right now is more damaging industrial disputes. Unfortunately, nine out of 10 train services will be at a standstill. Our message to the rail unions is simple: please rejoin the negotiating table and strike a deal."

She added: "Further walkouts will achieve nothing, apart from frustrating passengers, hurting industry, and slowing down our recovery."

Lines will be closed for the whole day between London and several major cities such as Birmingham, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Newcastle, Norwich and Manchester.

Avanti West Coast will not run any trains, and there will be no services between England and Wales.

Trains that do run will start later than usual and finish earlier.
