The England manager, dejected after taking the Three Lions to within touching distance of a first major trophy since 1966, was understandably down after the 2-1 defeat to Spain.

But with his future uncertain, he received a boost in the shape of a chorus of approval for the extraordinary work he has done over eight years.

The Daily Express is leading calls for Southgate, below, to be made a knight of the realm and has launched a petition for him to be recognised.

Now the dust has settled, many agree he should be honoured despite failing to end the 58 years of hurt.
