Brrritain braced for -16C as drivers warned of sheet ice

DRIVERS were warned to expect sheet ice as Britain braced for its coldest January evening in 15 years. After an overnight low of -12.4C at Tulloch Bridge in the Highlands, schools and offices yesterday warned pupils and staff to work from home and avoid blizzard-hit roads. Airports and rail lines were also affected.

The Met Office gave alerts for ice up to this morning for the North West, the East Coast, Northern Ireland and Wales. A further warning covered from South Wales down to Plymouth until 11am today.
