Cold comfort as Starmer mulls winter fuel U-turn

PRIME Minister Sir Keir Starmer would be wise to bear the embarrassment of a U-turn on winter fuel payments now, rather than face voters' fury in the future.

We are glad that Sir Keir has not ruled out ending the means-testing policy. To ignore the distress of pensioners, and the anger of the wider electorate, would be self-destructive. Labour's humiliation in this month's local and mayoral elections should be a wake-up call for a party which too often appears worryingly indifferent, if not outright contemptuous, towards millions of ordinary Britons facing hardship.
