Call to put culprits in stocks

YOBS who tore up and damaged scores of newly planted saplings have been branded lowlifes by locals.

Police have been called in after the vandals struck last week in a field where volunteers had spent two days digging in 360 young trees.

Drone images show dozens of saplings knocked over and strewn across the third of a hectare, along with stakes and protective sheaths, near Bolton's Hall i'th' Wood museum.

One resident said: "This is such a shocking sight. I can only imagine how much distress it must cause those who planted them, as I feel bad enough.
