As I fled a terrorist attack, journalists headed towards it

As Rector of the Journalists' Church, St Bride's in Fleet Street - a post I have held for the past 11 years - I sometimes reflect that I must have the most fascinating job in the Church of England.

- The Rev Canon Dr Alison Joyce

As I fled a terrorist attack, journalists headed towards it

St Bride's Church is one of the most famous in London

Although Fleet Street is no longer the home of newspapers, our ministry to journalism continues to expand, and is now global in its reach: earlier this year we held a service honouring the contribution of journalists covering the conflict in Ukraine, attended by the ambassadors of almost a dozen European nations.

Alongside this, I have the privilege of being invited into places that most clergy would never normally be able to access: I have spent time in the newsrooms of major daily newspapers, watching the next day's edition take shape.

I have also sat behind a bank of screens, observing a live broadcast of the television news. And I am routinely invited to major press awards, where the extraordinary achievements of those who work in every area of the media are recognised and celebrated.

At a more personal level, our pastoral ministry to journalists, of all faiths and none, regularly involves us conducting funeral and memorial services for those in the industry, some tragically killed during the course of their work.
