A visionary classic cult film-maker

The American film director David Lynch, who has died months after announcing he had emphysema, became famous for his surreal films and TV dramas that earned a huge cult following that eventually took him into the mainstream.

From hit television series such as Twin Peaks to classic films including Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, the director was a visionary film- maker with an iconic career spanning some 50 years.

He lived to see his film-making style immortalised as an adjective in the Oxford dictionary. Lynchian, it reads, blurs "surreal or sinister elements with the mundane".

The cult 1990s TV series Twin Peaks earned him an honorary lifetime achievement Oscar.
