£4m a year for jail with no inmates

A PRISON that cannot hold inmates because it contains "radioactive gas" is costing taxpayers around £4million a year.

The Prison Service knew about radon levels at HMP Dartmoor in 2020, according to the Commons Public Accounts Committee.

That year the prison's kitchen had a radon reading "nearly 10 times the acceptable limit".

Yet the Prison Service signed a lease for it two years later which cannot be terminated before December 2033, the report said.
