13½ years for rogue roofer who killed golfer in chase

A ROGUE roofer who ran over and killed a mother of three on a golf course during a police chase has been jailed for 13 and a half years.

John McDonald, 52, admitted causing the death by dangerous driving of Suzanne Cherry, who was playing golf with her husband on April 11 last year.

She was looking for a ball near a stream when McDonald's van ploughed into her, causing catastrophic injuries.

Suzanne died in hospital four days later on the eve of her 63rd birthday.

As McDonald fled with his two passengers — his son Johnny, 23, and Brett Delaney, 35 he stepped over Suzanne’s body, Worcester crown court was told.

The trio had earlier caught the attention of the police as they followed an elderly customer to an ATM in Kingstanding, Birmingham.

Under the guise of a company called Approved Roofs Ltd, they were fleecing elderly people by carrying out unnecessary, shoddy roof works.
