'We wear Aberfan on our shirts with pride'

PLAYERS from an ex-mining village's growing football club have come together to remember the victims of one of Wales’ biggest mining disasters.

Aberfan FC’s new women’s team joined with players from the men’s and junior teams to lay a wreath at the Aberfan Memorial Garden before their games on the weekend.

Tuesday, October 21, marked 59 years since the Aberfan mining disaster, when a coal tip collapsed and buried Pantglas Junior School and surrounding homes, killing 116 children and 28 adults.

Hannah Thompson, who is from the nearby village of Troedyrhiw, is one of the captains of Aberfan FC's new senior women’s side which decided that it wanted to honour the history of the village where they play.

The women’s side has only played a handful of games this season after it was set up this summer to create a team for the young girls who played at the club to move on to when they become seniors.
