Man punched and bit his wife and assaulted police officer after wake

A MAN repeatedly punched his wife and bit her on her chest after he became intoxicated while at the wake for his brother's funeral. He went on to assault a police officer.

Gary John, 61, picked up his wife from her home in Brynmawr on December 18, 2023, in order to attend his brother's funeral.

After the service, the defendant attended the wake at Brynmawr rugby club, where he began drinking to excess.

A sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court heard John's behaviour changed and he went to the British Legion club and another pub, where he continued to drink.

During this time, he accused his wife of having an affair and when they arrived back at her home, he accused her of not giving him sufficient support.
