It's not just Labour that doesn't care about our fisheries

FOR a nation surrounded by water Britain really doesn't seem to care that much about its fishing industry.

The country is a net importer of seafood, most of what's caught around its shores is exported and according to data from Cefas, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Acquaculture Science, commercial fishing's contribution to the country's economy (one recent estimate put it at 0.03%) is actually smaller than that made by sea anglers. In 2023 the profits of Games Workshop, which makes miniature plastic wizards and goblins for fantasy combat, exceeded those of the entire UK fishing industry.
